Everybody understands the terms right and wrong, but how do you know what action is right and what action is wrong? Most of the time, we are told to do the right thing, but everybody has a different version of what that is. Nonetheless, we have to consider the different scenarios and the context of each person’s problem. If a person steals food for their family, the person stealing will think it is right what they are doing, but the person who was robbed will believe that it is wrong. So, as they say, there are always three sides to a story, one’s person’s truth, the other’s truth, and the truth itself. (The example I just gave was to have an idea of what I mean by understanding the context in which one is acting upon). So the question, in this case, would be if right and wrong exist? Because if you think about it, everybody will agree or disagree with certain statements. It’s possible for some people to never agree with each other and indefinitely be against it. But, some things exist because it is ruled by nature itself. While on the other hand, something that lives within our heads is dependent on our own beliefs and dogmas. And even if we say that we don’t know how to define right from wrong, there is still a sense of morality that helps guide us throughout life. As a society, we are not rational anymore because we act unconsciously based on our surroundings' impulses and emotions.
There is a solution to break the unhealthy pattern of ours of being the person that is not ourselves. How do we do this? To start, understand the nature of morality, meaning that we have control over what can happen in the future in some aspects. Another way may be by recognizing that not everything that you may consider morally right will be right. (Li, G., 2018) And after a certain period, you will start to see morality as more of an opinion, which has a broader range that allows you to have the opportunity to change it over time. So, take the first step and realize what it is that you consider right or if it is based on what other people say?
